The folks at Nielsen offered some interesting data on viewership for the BCS National Championship game. It appears there is the potential for some very high ratings numbers, particularly in the Austin and Birmingham markets.
According to Nielsen, more than 50 percent of all TV households in Birmingham watched the Alabama's win over Florida in the SEC title game. And nearly a third of the televisions in Austin were tuned into to watch Texas' Big 12-clinching win over Nebraska.
What's more Birmingham has had the highest local ratings for all bowl games thus far this season, averaging a 10.6 rating for all of the contests. Austin ranks tied for 9th, with a 6.0 local rating during bowl season.
Could this be one of the most-watched title games in history? Perhaps, though it's unlikely to surpass the 2006 Rose Bowl game between Texas and USC that benefitted from a big audience in Los Angeles. That game, which went down to the wire, drew an average of 35.6 million viewers.
